FIXED! - Sharp R-1870 Conv/Micro shuts off after 59 seconds
My oven has started shutting down after running for 59 seconds. It is not tripping the breaker, just shuts down. Display is still powered, but cannot restart unless I unplug/replug it.
I at first assumed the board was going bad, but a few "googles" indicated that this behavior may be an intended indication that something is wrong. The options some people report are a bad damper motor, bad damper motor switch, or the thermistor needs replacing.
Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it? I guess my options are just replace it (it is 9 years old) somehow figure out which of these might be the problem. Sounds like trial and error might be the only way. Buy a new part, change it out, see if it fixes it.
I'll keep looking for a maintenance manual, but thought I'd poll the forum for any similar experiences with this model.
UPDATE
Starting to investigate. Took the top grill off. I can see the two squirrel cage blowers in the back. They do not turn, so maybe it is the fan motor switch... Trying to see how I can get the thing out of the cabinet...
ANOTHER UPDATE
OK, got it out of the cabinet. Took me a few minutes to figure out how they had it secured from the top. Loosening the two long bolts that are accessible where the filters go were not enough. Turns out the little piece of wood trim between the top of the oven the the ceiling of the slide was just wedged in place. Used a screwdriver to wiggle it out and there were two L-brackets screwed into a crossbar. OK, now to troubleshoot.
DIAGNOSED
Found Sharp Technical Bulletin MW-174 On page 18, it says this condition indicates the damper switch. I performed the switch test on page 22 and the switch appears good. So as indicated in the thread at the link provided by the poster below, I supposed the motor is bad. Now to poke around online and find the motor.
PARTS ORDERED
Part numbers can be found in the Sharp Supplemental Service Manual. I ordered:
FINAL UPDATE
Proud to say I have that sucker going again! I had to disassemble it quite a bit to get to the set screw that was holding the motor in place. It was really torqued in there! But it is back in the cabinet and working away! If you try this repair yourself, follow instructions in the tech bulletin to make sure the capacitor is discharged before sticking your hands in there.
