Fresh Water Tank Leaking

New to this forum. Have been lurking for the last couple days..

We just purchased a used 2010 Forest River Sandpiper, and have it almost ready to go.. But when testing out the water system, I noticed that one or both of the fresh water tanks are leaking. Crossing my fingers, but from what I can tell, it looks like it is leaking from the drain fittings.

I have been doing some searching, and all that I can find about the fresh water drains are the smaller ones. But, this one comes out of both tanks to a T, then down to a valve similar to the dump valves on the Grey and Black tanks.

Before I rip it apart, does anybody know if these PVC fitting are standard sizes that I can get from Home Depot, Lowes, etc..?

Thanks,

Dave

  • I just went out this morning and took another look at it, measurements, and pictures. It looks like it's a 2 inch pipe coming out of the bottom of the tanks.

View of Both Tanks and how they are connected:

Closeup view of the connection coming from one of the tanks, it's leaking from where the upper part of the white pipes meets the tank. So does it look possible to replace, or what's the best way to seal it? I'm not certain, but it looks like the bottom of the tank might be threaded, and that I might be able to cut off the T and unscrew the lower threaded connection from both tanks, remove upper from tank and re-seal, then put/glue back together.. Does anybody know whether the tank itself is threaded?

And just as a reference, this is the Black and Grey tanks more towards the front of the trailer:

  • The fresh water tanks on my Weekend Warrior use ABS piping and 1-1/2" gate valves. They are easy to change and inexpensive.
    1-1/2" valve

If you have to replace piping the job will be more complicated.
  • Hmm, that sure sounds like a waste water tank you are talking about. Never seen a fresh tank with a 2" outlet to a gate valve.
  • Thanks! Yep, definitely 2 tanks. From what I can find, it's suppose to have a 110 Gallon fresh water capacity, split between 2 tanks. The good side of it, they are mounted on the bottom of the frame, no insulation or anything in the way. It's just dripping onto the ground. Tomorrow I'll wipe the area down and see exactly where it's coming from.

So, by readily available. Do you mean available at the local hardware store, or do I have to go to a trailer/camping supply? They look like standard 1.5-2 inch PVC pipes coming off the tanks.

  • Welcome to the forums

Its extremely uncommon to have two fresh water tanks. Are you certain that indeed you do? The tank fittings should be readily available if indeed it is a faulty fitting, the biggest issue might be getting access to replace them. Do you have insulation or plastic covering on the bottom of the trailer covering the tanks. By removing part or all of it in the vicinity of the tank and putting in a few gallons you should be able to find exactly where the leak is without more water ending up soaking insulation etc. Hopefully someone with a similar model or water setup comes along to help troubleshoot.
