The wires don't matter, but a couple of points- a bad thermistor is not likely your problem- you could just disconnect it and the refrigerator would just be "on".
I hate to say it, but your refrigerator is likely at the end of its lifespan- the insulation tends to break down, the doors don't fit or seal well, and the cooling units lose a bit of the hydrogen charge, plus becoming partially blocked.
