fuse in the battery compartment?
One last issue with my solar install: The controller manual says the fuse needs to be no more than six inches from the battery terminal. That would locate it inside the battery box under the steps...

As mentioned, the wire before the fuse is not protected. If you had a long wire before the fuse, and that wire somehow got pinched or insulation worn thru, and that point got shorted to ground, you could have a fire.
