Generac Generator, no power after running a few minutes

I am having trouble with a Generac Model 020102. Starts fine, get power to the coach, but after running a few minutes I lose AC power, but the generator is still running fine. Checked all breakers and everything seems normal.

If I shut off the generator and wait a few minutes, it will start fine, get power for a few minutes, but lose it again. Generator seems to run fine just losing AC power.

Any ideas, anyone had similar issues? Thanks in advance.

  • The small pop is probably the thermal breaker opening up.
It sounds like you have an over amperage condition in the wires to the rotor.
This could be caused by a bad rotor or a bad stator.
Recommend more static trouble shooting before you burn up the voltage regulator.
The generac service manual covers rotor and stator checking very well.

  • Checked resistance while off and it was about 0.5 ohms. while running and getting power it was around 9.5 - 10.0 ohms. Right before I lose power it starts to spike, going up over 100 down to 10, just all over the place, then I lose it all together. I hear a small pop right before losing power, like a spark jumping.
  • Check continuity through the contacts. Should be close to 0 ohms.

If possible run a controlled amperage through it and determine trip point. Amp tripping value is stamped on part.

This may not be your problem but just one of the possibilities.

  • No, that's a battery charging limiting resister I think.
Go back to that same web site and select

    Generac generator parts
    Breakers

    About halfway down the page find 049350, 053623, 054450, 048476, or 054502
This will get you an idea of what it looks like. USE THE PARTS MANUAL TO GET THE ACTUAL PART

You may want to consider that the thermal switch controlling the dc to the rotor is bad or the rotor is drawing more amperage than it should.
Oblong, dark brown Bakelite frame, two spade connectors, small adjustment screw. Located inside the panel board.

Also, the stator has a one time thermal fuse imbedded in the winding. If it blows, use the other wire coming out of the stator that bypasses the thermal fuse.

Is this the thermal switch Jim?

  • Could be voltage regulator
    Could be brushes........or brush holders

Go to Generac and download the manual for your model......will model AND serial number
