Good question. I'll answer as best I can.
1) With twin Hondas or Yamahas at the 2000-2400 watt range, running a 15K BTU A/C is going to suck gas. With my twin gennys and the A/C running, I'd have to refuel about every 4 hrs. With an external fuel tank, I can run both gennys continuously for about 14 hrs.
2) If I have the ability to run the A/C for "14hrs," I don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to refuel. I've camped in the high sierras in July And we needed the A/C on at night because it was very hot and muggy. Almost monsoon like weather. In that case, its nice to have the A/C and actually use it
3). Just because its soooo hot, doesn't mean I will stop "boondocking." While everyone else floods a campground with full hookups, my family gets to continue to camp in pristine, isolated locations no matter what the weather temp is. I'd rather be enjoying a piece of the river, creek or mountains with few to no other campers and my Hondas, than some "canned campground" packed with sardines (RVers).
4) The added price of filling a $5 gallon external generator fuel tank a few times on a camping trip, isn't going to be the deciding factor on whether or not we actually go camping. The difference between paying a little more for generator gas and getting a quiet isolated campground, outweighs the "downer" of having to camp in a full hookup camping lot, full of other people I don't even know. I'd much prefer to pay a few bucks more in gas to have a view of the (hot) pristine Sierras, than to look at a guy's motor home slide out only 20' away from mine.
This is why I have an external Fuel tank for my generators. To be able to camp anywhere and run the generators all day and night... IF needed. It's like the old Ronco TV commercials. I just "set it and forget it."
