"Solar generator" is a joke, I'm surprised stores are still selling something like this.
"Solar system", permanently installed on the roof, is a different matter. The cost is ~ $1.30 per watt, plus unknown and widely varying amount for labor. This is a handyman's work, though solar installers will have you believe that it's some kind of woodoo.
IMO, any solar is better than no solar, because this is not apples to oranges (comparing to gas generator), but rather, belt and suspenders. Unless your area is really woody and rainy, consider generator a backup to solar, not the other way around. 300W array will let you run most items on most days, cost ~$400 in parts. Yes, you will be able to shut the generator down during quiet hours and still have power - except for (maybe) microwave, depending on the size of inverter. Time2roll summed it up well.
You will need to run a generator during those times when you need A/C - if you need A/C.
