GFCI Tripping when Magnum inverter is "Searching"

Something new just started happening this week. When running on my Magnum MS-2012 inverter one of my GFI circuits trips but only when the inverter is in "Searching" mode. In other words no loads on the inverter, everything in the RV unplugged. Flip on the inverter which immediately starts searching and pop! Now if I turn off the search feature or turn some device on in the rig that takes the inverter out of searching mode, that causes the inverter to send power to all receptacles, the GFCI doesn't trip. Nor does it trip when running on generator.

Any ideas?

  • I think the Magnum manual recommends certain makes of GFCI. Replace yours with a recommended model. Even if it doesn't work it's a cheap diagnosis.
  • GFI outlet is newish. 5th wheel is a 2013 so I can't imagine it's more than a couple years old.
  • Either lose the search or replace the gf or replace the outlet sans gfci.
  • Thanks justlou, I spoke with Magnum, they dismissed it as a problem outside the inverter. "No known issues with GFCI tripping.. has to be a wiring or appliance issue."

I'd like it to work as designed but being a nervous Nancy around electricity I may just leave it as is. When it's time to call out a Mobile Repair guy for something I'll have him bring a replacement GFCI and see if we can make it pop on a new one to rule out the receptacle itself.
  • If you decide to look into it further, call Magnum Energy 425 353-8833. They have an excellent Technical Support group and can resolve most issues over the phone.

That's what I'll do, just thought it was strange that search worked, now it doesn't. Whatever, not worth stressing about the only time the inverter is on is when it's inverting anyways.
