Hand Held Air inflators

Has anyone tried or know if the new on the market hand held battery air inflators will work to top off RV tires on a Class A or Class C MH? They look like a hand held drill. Not trying to fill a flat tire, but add a few pounds like 5lbs. Or is it just for bike tires and beach ball?

  • I was using a Campbell Hausfield 12 volt portable that I bought for $20. It lasted one season keeping 65 lb tires aired up. I then bought a combo unit that had its own battery, air compressor, jump start cables, an inverted, charging ports, etc for about $80 and used it to keep 80 lb tires aired up and it lasted about a year and a half. I took each unit apart to see if it could be repaired and found each one had a cheap piston arrangement that used a rubber grommet-like piston ring. The rubber had failed and the piston pin was not far behind. I would think your pistol compressor would fare about the same as my first two compressors. I swallowed hard and bought a good 12 volt unit that puts out 1-2 cfm and am happy with that. Another problem with the pistol unit as I see it is that you have to stand there and hold that thing in place and I really hate the cramps that would create in my body. Who wants to eat lunch holding a compressor? :-)
  • Save your money. Buy a cheap homeowner compressor, on sale, at the big-box store, along with a quality hose and fitting. I have a two-tank Hitachi that is 15+ yrs. old. I know some guys get good longevity out of Porter-Cable or Ryobi.

If you end up draining a battery to fill two tires +5PSI, methinks you're not going to be happy.
  • I have a class C with 16" tires and it's 80 psi max. I am talking about having 75psi in the tires after sitting for a few months and having to add 5 psi.
  • Out shop compressor is set at 175 PSI and is a 75 gallon compressor. It take me on average 1(one) minute per 10 lbs to inflate Motorhome tires. So, if the tire requires 120 PSI and the tire is at 90(this is usually what customers have dropped to), It takes me about 3 to 5 minutes to air up that 1 tire. HOW long do you think it would take this cheap type of system to fill a motorhome tire that requires in excess of 60 psi? A LONG TIME, if it can ever get it that high, regardless of its 200 psi rating. Those type tools are best for Auto/Trailer tires. Doug
