Headboard fell off. Suggestions on how to re-attach?

I was making the bed on Thursday before going camping for a couple of nights. I barely touched the headboard thing and it fell clear off. It was only held on by 16 little light gauge staples. Since...

Great idea. Does the self-adhesive backing stick okay to the wall luan finish? I tried that once on luan with a faux wood finish and it would not adhere for anything including trying a few different types of glue on plain velcro. The finish was like it had teflon or silicone on it.
