Help - Lost all 12V in house!

Woke up in the middle of the night and noticed that the ceiling fan was not on. Everything was working when I went to bed. Found out I've lost all 12V in the house. Still have all 110V. So, at least I can have a cup of coffee. Chassis is good.

I'm in Blanding, Utah in a campground. That is the good part. I don't have to be anywhere in the next week. Bad news is I'm not sure where the nearest tech would be. Maybe Cortez or Moab. So, I'm on my own with your help.

It is still dark outside. So, I can't really troubleshoot for a while. Coach batteries are original. Checked the battery cutout switch by the door.

Where do I start troubleshooting?

  • Ok, I'm working now. Checked everything as indicated above. No luck. I turned off the house battery disconnect switch in the battery bay and turned in back on and everything is working.

So, gurus... This is the first time that has happened since the coach was new. Anybody got a clue? What are the symptoms of my house batteries going bad? Would assume dim lights when not on shore power but what else?
  • If the converter is with the power centre and the converter up and died, you should still get 12v from the house batteries. Both battery and converter connect at the DC fuse panel, so that would be a starting point.

If the converter is a deck mount or if you have an inverter/charger away from the power centre, it could be wired to reach the DC fuse panel "across" the battery, so now first common point is the battery post and then the battery fuse near the positive post.

--another--The 12v and the 120v both share the rig's frame as the "ground" If the ground is lost the 120v will still work (uses hot and neutral) but the 12v won't. (uses positive and ground)
  • Ceiling fan or exhaust fan? I thought ceiling fans would run on 110VAC but what do I know since I don't have one in my TT.
  • If your coach went from "batteries fine" to "nothing on 12 VDC works", you could also have a bad connection, fuse or even the salesman switch turned off. So, start there.

What converter, charger or inverter charger do you have? Have you verified that the breaker to it (main breaker panel) is ON-- turn it off and back on.

Some inverter/chargers have breakers on the unit itself. Check that.

You can use another source to charge in the mean time. Even your toad and jumper cables or a separate 120 VAC charger.

First check the 120VAC circuit breaker for the CONVERTER.

The CONVERTER/CHARGER and the BATTERIES are the only two things that produce 12VDC in your trailer.

We always have a couple of 120VAC lamps in our trailer to use.
