Help connecting Coleman RT Grill to 10 lb propane tank

Bought a Paul Jr. Designs Coleman Road Trip Grill a few years ago. Stole the parts off the side-kick grill that came with our travel trailer so we could hook it up directly to the camper. Worked like a charm.

Sold the TT and bought a fver and now we want to hook up the grill to a 10lb portable propane tank so we can cook well away from the camper.

I cannot figure out what parts we need. We bought this MR. Buddy hose and hooked it up directly to the regulator that comes with the grill (so it can be hooked up to the disposable propane tanks) but that doesn't work. Must be a high pressure/low pressure issue?

I've stopped at several places and everyone just looks at me like I'm an idiot. Perhaps I am.

Can anyone help me out with what I need to buy to get this working? We'd also like to use the tank for our coleman gas skillet.

Well, that LOOKS like the exact same hose I use, only mine is a Marshall brass.

NOW,, I have worked on a Mr, Buddy heater that did not work off a luggable tank.. Turns out it's the hose's "Quick Disconnect" the valve pin inside it is not long enough so you need to screw it into the regulator very very very tight. I had to use tools to get it tight enough, then it worked.
  • We had a similar problem on our road trip grill. It turned out that the gas line was allowing gas out of the tank to fast when first turned on so the tank thought there was a leak and turned off the gas. Replaced it with a gas line from Home Depot that uses a very small hole on the input end of the line. this prevents the rapid gas flow when you first turn on the gas and prevents the tank from thinking there's a leak and shutting off. Works perfectly now.

You must turn on the gas and wait a few seconds before lighting so the line can fill with gas. It will slowly release gas when you remove the line from the tank until the line is empty. Takes some getting used to. If you look at the tank end of your gas line and it has a large opening instead of a pin hole size opening this might be you problem.

  • Yes - I mispoke in my original post. Hubby said he converted everything back to it's original state on the grill. So either the hose we bought is not compatible or our tank is faulty. I'm banking that I have to buy the coleman branded "high pressure" hose and not use the Mr. Buddy one.
  • Do you still have the regulator that came with the grill? You'll need that when connecting to the tank directly.

When you connected to the trailers system, you would have had to take off the grills regulator because you were already using the trailers system.

I've only been using individual tanks for my grill, stove, whatever and all I have is the hose and use the connection point on the appliance that you would connect a little 1 lb bottle to if you were using those, but they all have their own regulators on them..

    Good luck!
