Help with portable solar please

Many of you know my recent setup. Four Crown 6v CR235's. I know this question may be a bit vague but work with me on this. I would like to have a portable solar setup to help with the daily charging so I don't have to run the Honda 3000 as often. So is there a turn key set-up that someone would recommend?

  • We (brother and I) bought the Solarblvd 160w package. Replacing the wiring with 10 gauge, and moving the controller to brothers trailer, I already have one in mine.

I've not heard of one growing legs.
  • I bought the Renogy 2x100w kit with 30a controller for $319. Works great. Got it on Amazon.

Trouble with plug and play kit is that it is never quite how you would like to have.

Above kit could use a better controller and longer wire.
Beware of kits where the controller is attached to the panel as you can get too much voltage drop between the controller and battery. Controller should be separate and mounted close to the battery. Longer wire to the panels is not such a big deal.
  • go to Ebay and search X00 watt portable solar kit. You can pick up 200w delivered for $300 I believe. They have kits up to 300w. The same sellers are on amazon for more.

Solar Blvd sells turn-key portable kits at very competitive prices. I have the 120 watt kit and paid abour $200. I believe they also sell 160 watt kits. Good luck!
  • I would not recommend a portable set up. They tend to walk away while you are out sightseeing. . .

It is easy to install it on the roof, so it can not walk away ever. I used 1/4" stainless steel tamper resistant bolts into 'nutserts'. You can google nutsert or check u-tube to see how to install them. Graingers sells nutserts.

I used 6" long angle aluminum to mount my panels (home depot)

I used grey UV rated wire #10 for each 240 watts, also from Home Depot.

SunElec.com Select a panel with a aluminum frame, they will run about $1.50 - $2 per rated watt.

Wire them up, run the wire down the back of the refrigerator to the controller, then to the battery. They will keep the battery full while in storage, leading to very long battery life.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
