Honda 6500is question

Thanks Dan for your reply. I don't know any dealers that would let me try one. Camping world is the only one I know of in Albuquerque. I would probably buy one line from that marine diesel company that adds the tri fuel kit to them. I will loose the honda warranty if I buy one of them but I do want the tri fuel capabilities. I have an EU6500is.

Here is what I have run on it while the eco setting is ON.

- RV - including a/c (13.5k), microwave, etc
- home well pump 1 hp
- Shop fan (LARGE fan - 1hp motor with a 40A initial load).
- misc other stuff.

If you buy from a dealer, take the RV there and test it. If they don't want to let you test it - find another dealer!

That is true. You loose 4% per 1000 feet above sea level just like a furnace or boiler does. Too bad the honda doesn't have a adjustable main jet like the old brigs & station engines. My old coleman I adjust when I go up or down in attitude. Takes 15 seconds. Turn main jet rod in for high atitude and out for low and the engine will smooth right out. If I get the tri fuel honda you can adjust the pressure regulator with a screw driver to get it to run smoothe at any altitude so I probably would leave the low altitude jets in when I go to a low altitude lake and run on gasoline then propane when I'm up high so I don't have to keep removing the carbarator and replacing the jets. That would be a whole lot easier to adjust the pressure regulator plus the propane is cheaper in my area then gasoline and runs cleaner. The oil stays clean also so its a win-win. You know for the money that the honda costs you would think it would be fuel injected like a harley is. It would adjust itself for differences in altitude. Thanks Dan

The 7000 foot altitude is the gotcha- you will have to install high altitude jets, and it will be significantly derated.

I have ramps built to get my present Coleman 5000 into the back of my truck. I believe the Honda is probably lighter then the old noisy Coleman I have now. It has electric start & big battery. Its a chore but I can do it myself. I also have a crain on a flat bed trailer I can back the crain trailer up to the truck and let the crane put in the back if I'm feeling weak that day. I have lots of different equipment as I am a contractor so I'm not worried about the weight. I just want to make sure it will work as I hope it will. Its allot of money for camping but I could use as a home standby also. I will more then likely buy one already set up for trifuel, then if I did have to run for a long time at the house I could run off Natural gas and not have to have drums of gasoline sitting around going bad. Also I have found out that propane in my area is cheaper per gallon then gasoline & both propane and natural gas runs very clean and the oil stays clean and less wear & tear on the engine. Remember this engine is a splash oil system with no pressurized lubrication and or spin on oil filter. In fact it has no oil filter at all. The larger engines such as the built in ones for 5th wheels and motor homes have pressurized lubrication systems with spin on oil filters extending the life of the oil & the expected hours the engine will last. So I know that propane & natural gas would not put out as much power as the gasoline but the generator will be larger then I need anyway so it won't matter. Thats what I'm thinking about. I still think a Victron or Magnum boost inverter is the way to go with a smaller more manageable inverter generator. Cost would be similar and convenience would be wonderful.

Better start working out too. Those things are a load to handle..

What happens if you set the roof air to start on FAN first? Does the generator spin up? The answer is a SOFT START setup for the roof air unit.

I have a EU6500is. It will start my A/C when in eco mode. I have also used it to run my 2 hp air compressor when in eco mode and that works too.
