Honda eu 2000 question

I have searched the forums and can't find that my problem has been covered before.

My paired Hondas surge up and down under Certain loads. They are connected to a new Redwood 36 FB. When boon docking they behave fine when the AC is on or the converter is the only load. The toaster or microwave don't cause the up and down surging. It is when the hair dryer or the Jura capresso coffee center are turned on that the surging occurs.

Am I missing some simple explanation?

  • Change the jets for the elevation you are going to be at. Simple to do, youtube has some good sites on how to do it.
  • I would think that a steady load would not cause a surge. The generator would find its running speed for that particular load and remain at that speed. I'm not familiar with hairdryer operation but I'm wondering if there is circuitry in the dryer that adjust the load to maintain a constant temperature. The same with the coffee maker, and rather than an issue with the generator the surging is just the generator adjusting to a changing load.
  • Mine do this at times. Put the gens on the full power setting and check to see if the surging goes away. I think the Honda's are too sensitive at certain loads and it messes with it's brain! Chino
  • I had the same issue with mine when my wife ran her hair dyer or coffee maker but, it was only when we were above 5000 ft elev. I was told they surged due to the fact the factory settings are for sea level and we are never at sea level except if at the beach. I do not know it to be a fact but I thought I would try and take another campers advice, I had nothing to loose except a few bucks and some time. He told me to have one gen tuned at a shop that is use to tuning boats at high elev, 7000 plus ft and another at about 4000 ft elev.

I had a shop tune them up, even though they were new. I had one tuned for high elev by an out board boat mechanic in Big Bear because he was use to tuning engines for 8000 plus ft elev. Then the other for about 4000 ft. by another boat mechanic. I now use the choke adjustment to tune the gens to make them run smooth at what ever elev I am at.

Now, no more surging. Worked for me and have not had issues for seven years with the same gens. I do clean, maintain and run my gens for a min of 15min per month.
