Final Update:
Problem found - bad spark plug. He had finished servicing the generator with oil change, cleaned the air filter, new plug, etc. and it wouldn't run. He never replaced the plug again when it wouldn't start never thinking the plug he replaced was bad.
The generator is back in service and has run 45 hours or so out of the last 48 hours.
