No we are not doing it wrong ----the Honda eu3000is that I AND thousands of others have----- is perfectly suited for what we're doing !!!!!!
What the person is trying to do Is run a uninterrupted power supply which is very tight technical specifications ---and they have not properly grounded their rig and the generator!!!!!
Technically you should drive about an 8-foot copper Rod into the ground--- and hook up a ground to your electrical system, your trailer, and your generator ----that would take care of the "issue".
I use my Honda 3000 in the rain all the time---- I have a "cover " open on both sides......but have run it many hours in rain.
Grounding (via a grounding rod) and the neutral/ground bond are two entirely different things, and not really related to each other. Having an earth ground without bonding the neutral and ground will not appease something that is looking for the bond (and probably reporting the lack as an open ground).
The UPS is not complaining about the lack of an earth ground; there is no way it can detect that, in fact, since it has no ground reference built in. It may well be complaining about the lack of a ground bond. It could also conceivably be some other oddity or incompatibility between the generator output and the UPS, but I think that's rather unlikely; the Honda's output is pretty clean.
