Studies have shown that red generators are quieter, as long as people see the color before they hear the sound. Otherwise, there is no appreciable difference.
IMO, it's a nice change when RV campers get to hear gennies under the same conditions that tent campers do--there is no such thing as a "quiet" gasoline generator.
Plomosa is a broad expanse of desert pan with a slight tilt to it, and it doesn't surprise me that you could hear a red or blue gennie from that distance--even a "quite" one.
