Okay, now I'm confused. I just got an email ad from a particular RV vendor and they are selling horizontal 20 lb. propane tanks for $157. What is the deal and why would they be so much more expensive ...

I have read several threads through the years on this subject, and have concluded the majority of the people I encounter refer to the propane containers as "tanks". I will not argue that it is or is not the proper name, but will argue that everywhere I have been you will be understood.
For those that are curious as I, you may find this link of interest, Propane Tank Store. It has a lot of info on this subject. I find it interesting that the page linked says 10 - 20 lb Cylinders, then the first sentence says "Propane tanks for sale ...". Which is it, cylinders or tanks?
I do have a 20 lbs (5 gallon) Manchester Horizontal Propane Tank with Gauge ($175).
This site, Mission Gas Company, says " Propane cylinders, also called bottles, vary in size, shape, and capacity."
I see Burden Propane in Canada refers to the propane type containers used in RVs as cylinders.
It appears to me that MANCHESTER TANK OFFERS ASME PROPANE TANKS, DOT cylinders, and related accessories for recreational vehicle use. use either term, tank or cylinder.
