Horizontal propane tank leaking

I have a 20# horizontal propane tank that leaks at the stem of the knob when it is turned on. This tank is over 12 years old and would have to re-certified. To buy a new tank is about $175. Would I be better off having the valve replaced or should I go with a new tank? Have no idea what they charge for a valve replacement or where to take it. If someone could give me a ballpark figure for a valve replacement it would start me in the right direction.

  • Finally got the valve replaced, cost me $31 to get the valve replaced, tank recertified and filled with propane.

Being a truck camper, it is likely a horizontal DOT cylinder, not a frame mount ASME tank.
I agree take it to a real LP place, who can likely simply replace the packing in the valve, and not the entire valve. OPD valves for horizontal cylinders can be hard to find.

This is for truck camper, tank is not frame mounted. Didn't know they could repack the valve -that would save some $. I finally found a place by my brothers house about a hour away.

    This is correct.
  • Does it leak when fully opened? if not, fully open the valve and use it up then head to a propane supplier to have it replaced.
  • Had the same problem. Had a new valve installed for $29 here in Houston.

  • For sure any propane supplier that could re-certify your tank, would also be able to replace the valve, and would do it as part of the re-certification process.
