You stated scorched wires. Are you not curious WHY you have scorched wires???? You have scorched wires because you had a flame blockage and the flame flashed back and burnt the wiring. You need to replace the burnt wiring and I would replace the tstat/ECO and the Thermal sensor. Doug

AND cleaan orifice (soak in alcohol.....no poking or blowing high compressed air thru it), clean the burner tube (small bottle brush) and swab out the combustion/exhaust chamber (run a wire thru, tie a rag to wire then pull it back thru...chimmney sweep)
As stated....you probably had a blowback (flame coming back out of combustion chamber) enough so to scorch the wires.
Thermal Cut Out (temp fuse) should have blown shutting down all DC and stopping any heating cycles......thermal cut out (clear tube) should be positioned above the burner so it can be exposed to blowback,

Replace the thermal fuse, replace the t-stat/ECO and any scorched/burnt wires

That link I provided above should have everything you need. They also sell "tune-up" kits.
I just replaced the pressure/temp valve, ignitor and burner assembly. Cleanup the old parts and keep as a backup.

Thanks for the model number! No mixing valve on that model. I'd suggest you replace both the thermostat and ECO.

lot good stuff, if it was too hot I think the safety valve would pop off.and you would see water flowing to the ground. put a temp gauge in the hot water see just how hot ,hot is.

IF an 'EXT' model -----uses Mixing valve on backside to control hot water out to 130*F *tank water heated to 160*F then mixed with cold water via mixing valve
Typically the hot out from tank clogs and you only get luke warm then cold

If a '4E' model ----gas & electric use same set of t-stats
Normal temp T-stat (Brown wires)....140*F
ECO (energy cut off/high temp t-stat) 180*F...triggers RED Fault Light and locks out any refiring until reset

IF normal t-stat is NOT tight against tank wall and tank surface/t-stat dirty then normal will not open until higher temp is reached but before ECO trips

Check the T-stat terminals/spade connectors tight/clean and that t-stat is beign held tight

Make and model of the HWH please!
If it's an Atwood G16-EXT it could be the mixing valve on the backside.
