full_mosey,
I use the Sunsaver 15 with 300 Watts of flat mounted solar panels.
The controller doesn't shut down. Rather the output just limits at ~15 amps. Anything in excess is simply clipped. This type of operation is allowed by Morningstar.
I chose this combination because:
- I usually camp in the winter when my panels could seldom output the full 300 watts anyway. So I chose to optimize the system for what I really need (~ 150 to 200 watts .... which includes microwave use) and sufficient panel area to provide that power in the environment that I usually camp, rather than just building a system "as big as possible".
- In the spring and summer, there is plenty of sun and if it takes the controller a hour or two longer to charge the batteries....so what, I am usually fully charged by noon that time if year anyway.
- It's smaller and less expensive!

Wow, I thought I was being outrageous in posting the 300W 36Vmp panel.
