How do I ground TV antenna?

Hello Everyone,

I will be placing a residential tv antenna on top of my park model trailer which is at a seasonal camp ground. How do I ground this? To the chassi or do i need to sink an 8-10 foot grounding rod?

Thanks,
Paul
  • But for lightening purposes do I have to sink an 8 foot rod or can I ground it to the chassi?

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Two answers:

From a "Television reception" view point, no ground is needed, The antenna is a "Balanced" design, and those are NGP (no ground plane required) antennas, In the antenna will be a device sometimes called a transformer but it's really a balun may be 1-1 or 4-1 depending on the antenna design, this is what matches it to your coax into your RV, the shield of the coax is grounded internally.

FOr LIGHTENING protection (recommended) grounding the MAST is a good idea.. NOTE: if it gets hit, it wont matter if it's grounded or not, you gonna have damage.

But proper grounding may lessen the odds of a hit.
  • The main reason for grounding an antenna is to divert a lightning strike to the ground rather than having it following your coax into your RV.
  • I suspect the 8 foot grounding rod, though cheap and effective, would be overkill. Unless, of course, you were seeking to get double use out of the antenna as a lightning rod (actually, not a bad idea).

When you drive that thing, do remember to locate it such that you don't catch any pipes or wires . . . which might be tricky to do. Maybe running the ground wire to the water spigot would be a better idea.
