How many batteries?
How many batteries are needed to insure that a Progressive Dynamics PD4655V (55 amp using 4g wires) will go into boost mode when the batteries are at 50% SOC?

Not quite. Yes for sure if you force boost with the CW. Not so sure if you let it act on its own. Perhaps you could run a test on that as a follow-up?
With test result please also add how long those #4 wires are and if pos and neg both all wire or if neg is part via frame, as can affect what the converter "sees"
