I know there are a lot of smart people who can look this up quickly, but I am not one of them. I would like to know about how many gallons of water would be in a piping system that is 600' long, and 6" diameter steel pipe. Then I will be able to figure out how much water treatment to add. I don't need a really accurate guess, within 50 gallons is fine. . Thanks,Fred.

Well (no pun intended since ours is about dry), while everyone's math skills are still fresh ... we just installed two new 5000 gallon storage tanks with about 150 feet of 1 1/2 inch pipe going from them to the main pumping tank that supplies our home.

So ... how many gallons can we store in the two new tanks plus the pipe running between them and the pumping tank??? :B

Assuming this is 6" sch. 40 steel pipe, the inside diameter is 6.065" and the enclosed volume is 1.5 gal/ft. Therefore - 900 gallons.

If it is schedule 40 steel pipe, the OD is 6.625: and the ID is 6.031:
Then the correct equation for schedule 40 pipe is:

(6.031 / 2)^2 * pi * 600 * 12 / 231 = 890.408

6" inside diameter or outside diameter?
If outside diameter, we need to also know the thickness of the pipe walls.

SD state dept. of water resources rule of thumb for 6" pipe is 1.5 gal/ ft.

Thanks everyone! I knew that I would be able to get a quick answer.

880 gallons. And I am filtering about 2 GPM of that water in a 5 micron filter, so I am guessing 120 GPH, and every 7 hours I should have filtered 'all' of the water.
