How to get mold out of the carpet.

There's mold and then there is MOLD!

Bleach requires a 10 minute soak time to kill mold and then you are left with a wet spot that needs drying. Vinegar with hydrogen peroxide is an excellent mold killer. Does not require much and does not require soaking of the carpet. Put it in a spray bottle and mist slightly. 3 parts vinegar and 1 part hydrogen peroxide. Causes the mold spires to collapse.

Once a year after I take the rig out of storage I use my carpet scrubber machine with a mild bleach/water solution followed by a hot water solution.

I have a nice carpet that I use to grab grit and dust from shoes and feet as I pass the entry door. Teak floor.

It got moldy when I had rolled it up for storage. Stored it on the patio under an overhang. Measures roughly 3 feet square.

I have plenty of tarps. Also a kiln fired ceramic bowl.

I heated most of a gallon of Clorox to the point of boiling. The fumes were deadly.

I poured the bleach into the "olla" then set the bowl in the center of the rug.

Placed the silver tarp over the bowl and out past the edges. Silver tarp, silver carpet, Quicksilver. I confess...

The next morning I uncovered the carpet. Black powder on the fibers. I whacked the carpet on one of the concrete columns patio roof support. I was wearing a ball cap, painter's mask and gloves.

Then I used spray-on carpet cleaner and a shop vac.

For some reason the mold did not attach itself to underneath the carpet. Lucky me.

If the danged carpet had not been silver I would have binned it. This is a lot of work to go through to clean it.

A hardware store, big box store will have the appropriate wrench, usually double ended, various sizes on each end. Probably less than $10, not high tech.

Thanks Jules6! I will try that. The nut doesn't seem to be real tight because it isn't keeping the strainer up against the sink very tight. Now that we have that figured out all I have to do is figure out what I can use to turn the nut with. My channel locks look like they are about an inch too small to span that nut.

Use a needle nose pliers into the strainer while turning the large nut.

I did find the kitchen faucet leaks at the base where it pivots. That should be an easy fix- new faucet set. One side of the sink drain leaks under the strainer and I am trying to take it loose so that I can fix it right. Is there some trick to holding the strainer so that it doesn't turn while you use some kind of giant spanner on that locking ring?

This depends on the carpet but I'v found Clorox to be very aggressive where mold is concerned... THE PROBLEM is it can bleach the color out of your carpet so the "Test in a hidden area" part applies.

I'd use like one cup to a gallon or two of water for mold. But that's me. and open windows, doors and turn on fans.
