Too late. :) Thanks for that. But I would like to amend your observation. I don't think any living thing wishes to be disrespected. Women are not any more sensitive in this regard, they are simply more vulnerable and must, by necessity, be more aware of aggressive energies around them...and be more self-protective.

I plan to check with some people who deal with RV design/mechanics once I get back to Mesa.

Gotcha. Yep, that's what it's starting to look like. Lots of narrower support trusses. I looked at a lot of photos of roofs on line and they all seem to have similar designs so no, hanging from just one wouldn't be a great idea.

Wow....Project much?...lol... I'm having a conversation and offering my thoughts. I have in no way made up my mind, many people left to consult. I think what you're sore about is that I *didn't* make up my mind, based solely on your input. I guess I was distracted by the sound of my own howling while trying to figure out how in just a few posts a yoga swing turned into "pole" (which conjures up all sorts of images). It's hard to integrate your input when you don't even understand what it is I want to install. (Isn't that sort of the first rule of advising another with regard to safety issues?)

I'm grateful for all the input I'm getting. I'm very interested in physics and all things mechanical. I also know some people approach life very differently than I do. So I take it all in, as I do with every project, make my own decision.

And I *am* building it for just myself. No one else will ever...use... this swing. This is the third time I have noted that.(really...?!) I don't live in a world of lawsuits and liability, am a single woman with no children or grandchildren and I take responsibility for my own choices. If you're going spiral into resentment and get all upset (speaking of victimhood) make sure, for your own sake, that you've got the facts straight. Or not...it makes no difference to me. I realize some people enjoy that kind of thing.

To make hanging from the ceiling just like standing on the roof, put a steel plate inside a shoe, set it on the roof then bolt up through it. :B

Structurally, there's no difference in the stress of standing on a specific spot and hanging from it.

NO..that is where you are wrong..

there is little difference in standing on a pipe, than hanging from it with your hands, it will support you or it won't , depends on the size of the pipe

there is a World of difference in standing on a roof

than hanging underneath from two screws .. screwed into 2" truss

the forces involved are much different, and much more concentrated

that is point you are not accepting

standing on top, you are standing on the LUAN aka plywood top surface the roof itself designed to carry weight, it spreads the applied weight across all the truss surfaces it makes contact with

hanging under the ceiling any applied weight is a direct pin point force applied to the lag screws in a 2" truss never meant to have something screwed in and pulling down

its like the difference between hanging from a pipe with both palms/hands gripped tightly around the pipe
or
trying to hang by the thumb and fore finger of each hand
trying to hang your full weight on just (2) digits of each hand is a lot harder, to much force applied to , too small an area
its physics

those 2" trusses where never designed to have heavy lag screws in them and weight hanging from them, use a big enough screw and the truss is going to split even if you hit it dead center

Personally, I'd go with what Profdant suggests before I'd drill through the roof. You could paint the structural pieces to match the interior and they wouldn't look as industrial. Plus, if you decide you need to move it to another area, it is easy enough to do.

I really think that what you need is a knowledgeable local person who can look directly at your roof and design a system that will work. The hard part is going to be finding someone good, when you don't have the background to assess their skills yourself. Do you know any builders, architects, engineers, etc. who could help you interview a couple people?

Here is a work-around -- using steel 2 x 2 perforated square tubing (available at the hardware store), build two side support structures in this shape:

Anchor the vertical supports to both walls using plastic spiral wall anchors -- pre-drill the pilot holes and be careful not to drill in too far.

Then connect the two side support structures with a cross bar just under the ceiling, using quarter inch bolts with large washers to fasten the cross bars to the side supports.

It will look a little industrial, but you will avoid damaging the roof. When and if you want to take it down, you would just have to fill and paint the small holes in the walls.

On edit -- I see that the diagram did not "print" well. There should be at least a foot of space between the two vertical support bars on each side of the structure, to distribute the load.
