Depends on the model. Some are stacked at the installation site, and are easy to separate them. Some of the models at my work, a retirement center, have the washer controls at the dryer level, and can not be separated at all! They only have one power cord for the washer/dryer combo. If you have two power cords, then separation might be possible.
Currently we are buying new washers and dryers that have a 'stacking kit' and installing brackets on the bottom of the dryer to allow stacking on top of the front load washing machine. In this case, the front has sticky double sided clear tape, while the back are two brackets with 1/4" head screws holding the bracket to the washer, and no screws into the dryer, but it sits on top, then is shifted to the left, back into the bracket, then back to center to lock it in place on top of the washer. This way it can be stacked once the washer is in place, no tools required.
