How to replace washers in leaking shower faucet

My Phoenix shower faucet won't stop dripping. I removed the knob and it looks like a regular faucet at home, only cheap plastic. The thing the washer is afttached to looks set deep with rings around ...

We're out on a trip and still have 3-5 days left. Want to stop at hardware store for quick fix. Will look into replacement when we get home.
