How to replace washers in leaking shower faucet

My Phoenix shower faucet won't stop dripping. I removed the knob and it looks like a regular faucet at home, only cheap plastic. The thing the washer is afttached to looks set deep with rings around ...

take another look could be a rubber cap siting on a spring. I,ve pulled them straight out with small needle nose pliers .
