HW Heater flame control

Atwood hot water heater GH6-8E in a 2004 Sightseer. Heated fine but had noisy yellow flame. Closed air inlet as far as I could which is about 1/4 open. Still noisy with yellow flame. Used aluminum foil to further restrict air - seemed to work but obviously this is not an ideal repair. Next step?

Yellow flame is STARVATION of air. You probably have a spider nest/partial blockage of the burner tube. Take it loose and clean it out. Also remove the Gas orifice from the gas valve and blow it out. Do NOT attempt to poke something in the orifice hole. Also, IF the Burner chamber has a mud nest inside, that will cause your type problem. You cannot see the nest. Atwood states to remove the upper exhaust vent and roll a golf ball down. IF unblocked the golf ball will come out at the burner assbly. Doug

Yup. Spiders love propane. This is a common problem.
  • Instead of 'jury rigging' it..........clean it.
Yellow flame is due to lack of AIR

Burner tube, orifice, combustion chamber, spark electrode

Yes that means removing parts and cleaning them.
    Burner tube..small bottle brush
Orifice---soak in alcohol and then blow thru it (no high pressure)
Spark electrode---remove and clean it up with some emery cloth. Combustion chamber....run a wire thru and out exhaust, tie rag to it and pull back thru

    Simple cleaning works wonders

  • I'm having the same issues. I can hear mine changing sounds as it is running. Like it is gulping too much air at times. If you would be so kind, if you find any information to correct your problem please let me know.
    Thank you in advance
