HWH leveler repair on 99 Damon

We have a "new to us" 1999 Damon Intruder with HWH pivoting hydraulic leveling jacks. One of the jacks has a broken spring and therefore doesn't retract properly. I'm going to attempt to change the spring myself as well as replacing them all so I know we're good. Just wondering if any of you DIYers out there had any words of wisdom on this project.

  • I did the spring job Saturday and I found a little more efficient process than the washers. I used a small pair of vise-grip tong pliers as a ring an put the hook of the spring in them. Then clamped a regular set of vise-grip pliers on the back of the spring hook to us as a handle. Then stuck a bull pin (a small pry bar would also work) through the opening of the tongs and levered against the bottom of the foot to stretch the spring open guided the hook into the hole with the standard vise-grips. Once I got my method together it only took about 15-20 minutes per jack.
  • Thanks, I would not have thought about that on my own! I saw the first reply saying he used washers and I had not wrapped my mind around how that would help. I've got washers at the house so we'll give this a go. Thanks for the input!
  • I use washers as well- just bend the spring one way, stick washers between the coils, then bend the other way for more washers. Not hard at all.
  • I've already got all 4 sets of new springs from my local rv shop and yes they are HWH. The shop told me there is a special tool to make it easier. I'm going to give it a shot and if it's too much I'll let them do it.
  • Are you getting new springs from HWH?

I had to replace springs on one lever. Took me some help, extra hands.
Put spacer's (used large washers)in spring to extend it. Made the hook up easier.
