In 2009 I spent four months in New Zealand where diesel fuel was a lot cheaper than gasoline (petrol). Diesel cars were becoming more popular so the government decided to narrow the price gap by charging a Road User Charge (RUC). People with diesel cars had to go to the post office and purchase a RUC sticker. They were sold in 1000km increments. This process could easily be applied to electric vehicles for the collection of road tax.
