Ideal Inverter Generator

Like a lot of others I'm looking for the ideal inverter generator.

For many, the hundred dollar question and major prerequisite seems to be: "Will it run my 13,500 BTU a/c?"

Some Yamaha fans anguish over whether to invest in two EF2000's for $2100, or save some hard-earned money and take a gamble whether the much less expensive Yamaha EF2400iSHC ($1350) or louder EF2800i ($1550) will run their a/c. Or, just go with the more expensive, heavier, and higher wattage EF3000iS/EF3000iSEB ($1900-$2200), which have better odds of running their a/c.

Then there's the die-hard Honda fans who have a similar choice, with the exception Honda doesn't have anything to compete with the lower-priced Yamaha EF2400iSHC or louder EF2800I. So they're left with either the two EU2000's ($2150), the much heavier EU3000iS ($2000), or much lighter (compared to the EU3000iS) EU3000i "Handi" ($2300).

The most popular combination seems to be the paralleled, dual Honda EU2000 setup--with proven reliability, high resale, but IMO just too much money ($2150) for the occasional r/v'r.

Then there's the made in the far east competitors. Cost is a huge attraction. But, reliability/service and overstated surge capability seem to be major negatives.

What is a guy/gal to buy for their hard-earned money?

Anywhoser, I was just about ready to pull the trigger on a Yamaha EF2400iSHC, when I saw this latest inverter generator from Champion. It's the 75531i, a 3100 max./2800 rated watt inverter generator with a 30 amp TT-30R connector, cast iron cylinder sleeve, 1.6 gallon gas tank with 8 hr run-time at 25% load, 58 dba (full load??), 84 lbs., and Eco mode. Very similar in weight and style to the Honda EU3000i "Handi" (with handle and wheels). Currently being sold online for around $950-$999. From what I gather, Champion has a decent reputation for warranty service/parts. Obviously, being a new model reliability is an unknown. Even assuming little surge head-room, 2800 continuous watts would seem to be more than enough run the vast majority of 13,500 BTU a/c's out there.

I've already read one informal online review of an individual who reported he was able to run his 15,000 BTU a/c with the 75531i with the Eco mode on.

Is this inverter generator potentially the cat's meow (in terms of price vs. performance)? Or . . .

If I want air all day/night I am looking for hookups.
At least check that the gen is compatible with an extended run fuel tank.

Me to but if I cant find hookups I carry this one
  • I would use the dual Honda 2000i generators. This setup gives you more options and they are probably easier to sell when you are done with them. They are light, efficient, and relatively quite.
  • Well i just went through the same decision making process. I looked long and hard at the Champions and red and blue.
I ended up buying the Yamaha 2400isHC and I have no regrets other than I spent so much time researching them all. What won me over to the Yamaha was the 3 yr warranty parts and labor and the ability to take it to any Yamaha dealer for service if needed as well as the fuel petcock shut off. It runs my 13,500 AC no problem and it is just light enough for me to pick it up and move it by myself and it is very quiet even at full load.
The Hondas didnt offer the fuel petcock, the Champions need to be sent back for service and you pay for shipping also shorter warranty period.
Good luck with your decision I am very happy with mine.
  • I had been shopping for a replacement generator for my 10 yr old Elim 3000 and had decided on a Yamaha 2400 when I ran across the Champion 3100 Invertor. After some research, I bought the Champion yesterday at the Camping World in Bakersfield, CA. I tested it out today and am pretty happy, but had one little glitch. After the initial start on first pull, I ran on Eco mode, and then normal mode for about 8-10 minutes each, then plugged in and switched on the trailer which has pretty full batteries, so not much load, and could not even tell any change in Eco mode. Had about 121V at the socket. Did a test run of the 1000W micro with a glass of water and the gen kicked up and then down when the micro went off. Ran the A/C fan only and then the A/C. No problems then about 12 minutes into the A/C run, the generator just kicked off, but no indicator lights on the front. I restarted (three pulls) and brought up slowly with no problems and ran the A/C for over an hour and cycled the compressor twice with no issues. Not sure what caused it to kick off the one time, but it seems fine now, even with the long run of the A/C after. I did a cool down cycle, ran the carb out of gas and started again about 4 hours later and did a short run of the A/C without incident.

Anyway, overall, it is quiet and stable and powers everything fine. I will report the one shhutdown to Champion Power Eqpt, and see what they have to say, but I think it was just a one time thing.

I am currently working to mount it in the rear mounted box where I had the Elim, but there is a lot of plastic on this thing! I just strapped the frame bars on the Elim, but this one will require a little more work.
  • You need to break it in. Don't run full load right off.

    . . .

Did you have both your frig, hot water turned off, or running on gas? Is it possible one of them (frig, HW heater, or battery charger) turned on without you being aware of it?

Also, what size is your a/c? 13.5k BTU? 15k BTU?
  • Lots of lower cost gen set out there, some not too noisy, I would check out one of those. Unless you are strong I would check out the two 2000s and parallel kit . You can get two of the other ones for the price of red or blue, and will it do the job, yes, will last as long as the other, with good maintenance yes.
  • Anybody rig up an extended run tank for the Champion 3100 yet? Does it have a vented cap similar to the Honda that would allow a similar set up?
  • I am surprised nobody has mentioned the Dometic LW3000 plus. 2600 watts continuous, 59 pounds, 10 hour run time. They don't give a decibel rating, but I bet it is reasonable, being an inverter style enclosed genset. List price is $1099, but the street price is lower.
