Soldering stuff sometimes seems to require one more hand, even when you have two good ones. I find this is especially true for putting connectors on cables and such like tasks.
One trick I've evolved is to wrap a few turns of solder around my index finger, leaving a "tail" from the finger tip, and using just that finger to poke the solder on the joint while using the rest of the hand to position things. With the right sort of iron (one with the handle relatively close to the tip), it might work out well to do that with one hand.
SMT work with solder paste and a toaster oven (or similar) might be easier where it is practical—nice for constructing new stuff, not so great for repair work.
