insulating the floor

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to insulate the floor on my class C. There is no clearance to even add a rug because there are drawers that actually rub on the linoleum flooring.

Would closed cell flexible foam used on the bottom of the RV simply abrade away from road debris hitting it?

I saw the flexible foam on a truck camping thread and thought it might be just the ticket.

I would be concerned about that too.

How about rigid foam insulation held up with screws (and large diameter fiber) in the areas that you feel comfortable putting it?
Where you can't put the foam, maybe you could put some sheet metal on short (same height as the foam is thick so the foam can be part of the support) standoffs, creating a air space below the floor?

Other than increased comfort for your feet, I wonder if doing all this work would result in enough of a reduction in heat loss to make it worthwhile? I really don't know.

  • Don, if rugs would help, the drawer fronts usually overhang the actual drawer by at least a 1/2". Either raising them on the drawer or removing (worst choice) the 1/2" from the bottom might give you the clearance you desire.
  • Hi mts,

I'm pretty mobile. 2000 kilometers (1200 miles) from Oct 7 to Oct 21.

If there were a quick way to skirt--and a good way to store the skirt I might be interested.

Are you mainly mobile or stationary? If in one place, you might consider skirting around your "C". This will keep wind from blowing underneath your rig as well as give you dead air space which is good for insulation.

Be careful though... the dead air space is quite attractive to rats and mice who will be clamoring for a 50 cent tour of your RV, meals included.

If so, how about (top to bottom); Fiberglass batts, Reflectix, and Coroplast.

    Hope this helps,

  • I would think adding padding/insulation anywhere on the floor where it does not interfere with drawers would be better than none at all.
