With ours it is flakes of soot falling on the burner slots. Also the old burner slots had burnt/rusted out leaving a big hole. Got a new one with nice new slots.
Banging on the chimney gets the loose flakes down to be cleared away, but there seems to be new flakes come down every so often anyway so it is an intermittent problem. Needs a proper chimney cleaning if I ever get around to it.
