Is 3000W genny enough?

Looking to buy a generator to allow boondocking on our Alaska trip this summer. We have one Dometic 15000 BTU AC. Will a 3000W unit provide the power needed for our 5th wheel if we are careful with other appliances?

I never had any luck running a generator around here at public camp spots on the East side of the US. Seems like everywhere we go has generator run time restrictions. A couple of hours in the morning and maybe three hours in the later afternoon. Never after 8PM... This includes the Natl Forest sites around here... I did find a couple of Natl Forest areas that allowed the generator from 8AM to 8PM but never after 8PM...

We only use a small 2KW generator for three hours each day when allowed to re-charge our battery bank when needed... We beefed up our battery banks and run off the batteries then re-charge again the next morning when camping off the grid.

Out West and at DISPERSED camping sites seems like you can use one more often.

But yet I hear everyone buying generators haha...

  • IIRC years back when i was looking at truck campers they came with a 2800 gen set and you had to alternate between AC and microwave?

Yes - I have the Champion 3100W and it will power my 15k AC and everything else, but it doesn't like it when I add the microwave. The microwave will sputter. Costco has it for $699 every few months. It looks like it is on sale again for that price -

  • I think you're right ,wildtoad, about the Alaska temps but since I'm doing it I might as well be ready for later trips in the lower 48
  • Yes. But you might check out the average Alaska temps for the time you're going. May not need AC.
