Is my converter failing?

I have a PD 9145 with Charge Wizard. While hooked up to shore power with no battery I can light two lights but they dim substantially when I light a third. Go out altogether if I light a fourth. Is this normal? All 120 volt receptacles and utilities work fine. Thanks for your help.

Turn on 4 lights and check the voltage right on the converter board. If it's 13.6V or more the converter is good and you need to look for bad connections (and don't forget the grounds!)

Ditto, do this first! With the battery disconnected.

I agree. If the batteries are not connected and if you are on shore power, the converter output should be 13.2 or so volts. The wiring diaagram should be on the panel door.
Hookup the batteries, disconect the converter (open circuit breaker), and check the voltage of the batteries.
Converters are easy to replace by yourself.

  • Time for a bench load test. You will probably be installing a new unit so no loss for removing it.
  • Turn on 4 lights and check the voltage right on the converter board. If it's 13.6V or more the converter is good and you need to look for bad connections (and don't forget the grounds!)
  • When I have this happen it usually means the circuit breaker on the 12v side of my converter has tripped. It is a small automotive type breaker not the house type. It will trip from time to time due to heavy loads like slideouts and leveling jacks running at the same time.
  • NO it is not normal.
The converter should handle ALL 12V system loads

120V AC power in......13.6V DC power out (tested with out battery connected).

IF it doesn't produce 13.6V DC output it is bad...which yours indicates due to lack of maintaining 12V DC System (lights dimming etc.)
