Is there anything special about RV electrical outlets?

I'm thinking about adding a duplex electrical outlet in my outside storage area to use as a charging station for my cordless drill. I can easily get to the wiring and which runs along the top of the storage space and goes to a bedroom outlet. I pulled the outlet out to look at the connections and found that it is not like typical house outlets and I can't just tap on to the terminals. It's no problem because I can splice into the wiring underneath. But I was thinking of replacing that outlet with one that had USB ports to charge the phones. I was just wondering if there is something unique about the outlets other than maybe just quicker to assemble as the unit is being made?

  • If the RV outlet is on the tail end of the run (single wire to it) you can add another wire via the insulation displacement connections and add your new outlet to it.
If you have room behind the RV outlet it may be easier to replace it with a residential-style one. An "old work" box is a bit larger than the RV outlet, so you'll have some sawing to do.
  • Nope. Suggest you replace the current one with a new one and add your new one to that one. That way no splicing needed.
