Is your Onan MicroQuiet 4.0 quiet?

I'm considering buying a 2005 Chinook with the Onan Micro Quiet 4.0. For those of you that know is it much quieter than the Onan Microlite 2.8?

Thanks in advance.
  • In my 5th wheel was fairly quiet on the side where the exhaust came out, but noisy at the front. Not bad at all inside the trailer but I could tell it was running.
  • Mine is not very quiet inside, probably due to sloppy mounting but it IS fairly quiet outside.
  • I can't make the comparison, can only say a better name would be Micronoisy for the 4 kW generator. I often carry an eu2000i and use it instead.
  • Catalyst would be fine with me. I'm tired of smelling exhaust fumes. Nox reduction can be done with or without EGR. Valve timing or 3 way catalyst may be enough. Personally not so thrilled with EGR although it has been used as a strategy to improve fuel economy (reduced pumping loss). There is no reason these units could not have much cleaner safer exhaust and ultimately less maintenance. Small engines have been running this technology for years without issue. Automotive engines for decades. There is also no need for it to be extra fire hazard with proper shielding.

I'm prepared for the onslaught :)

This generator is as quiet as the installation is good. I had one I installed. I still have the installation maunaul that describes how to best do it.... But most of what I have seen are not really installed at all... And not all that quiet as a result.
  • California is considering a law to force all engines over a certain horsepower to be equipped with a catalyst muffler and EGR system.

I would not strongly associate the word "Quiet" with my 1996 Onan Microquiet........it's not construction grade loud.....but not quiet either.......

Yes.. the quality of the sound isn't awful. But in a typical forest camping situation I only want to run it when absolutely necessary due to noise. A portable inverter generator under low load is much quieter. One thing for sure the 4000 is very common and if you tour a non electric campground at dinner time it is likely you can hear one run.
