The ambient temperature has a lot to do with how much power the air conditioner draws. It's just the way they work, that the hotter the outside temp, the more power the air conditioner draws. And it's a 2-edged sword, as the outside temp goes up, the generator power capability goes down. As long as the power coming from the generator is below its continuous rated power, I wouldn't consider that pounding it to death, or for that matter, pounding it at all.
