You can only tell the difference in a large screen TV which is why 32" flat screens were mostly 720p for the first several years. It was only the status factor that drove more 1080 TVs of that size. Also, it takes about a 26" or bigger flat screen to give you the same height picture of a 19" CRT because of the different screen shape and that the size is measured diagonally.
