Keep that Generator out of the rain!

Keep your generator dry.....Gerry Can, Ratchet Strap and a golf umbrella. Worked excellent even in a strong wind. I'm going to make a bracket that attaches to the generator.

  • Where there is rain there are puddles. Besides the cover to keep it dry from above, you need it up on blocks to keep it out of the puddles (also any extension cord connections along the way to the rig.)

In wind, the rain arrives sideways, so now you have "issues." I have not solved for that--I just ignore it and hope for the best. So far so good.

Don't put the gen under the trailer overhang (front or slides) since the gen exhaust can find its way into the rig--not good!--especially if there is any "breeze" (howling gale to non-RVers)
  • I'm going to fabricate a board that the generator sits on and a mount attached to the board for the umbrella. I could bring the umbrella down closer to the ground so wind wouldn't be able to get under it as easily.

Although this set up with it only lashed to the 5 gal gas can really handled a bunch of wind. But as I use the gas in th3e can, I'm going to lose my ballast.
  • ScottG,

I had a problem with the generator in the rain. We were camping n Quartzsite, AZ in a downpour. I thought the generator was ok, as it was under one of the slides of the fifth-wheel. Later, when we tried to start it again it would not kick over. I took it in to a Honda dealer (it was a 2000i) and he found water in the carburetor. We had it repaired (cleaned out the carburetor) and it was okay.

I wish I had an umbrella or something else.
  • The only reason Honda says not to expose it to rain is because the outlet is not rated for it. Otherwise people do it all the time without any problems.
  • You just jinxed yourself with that one.....next hurricane's goin' your way !
