K&N air filter

Anybody have any opinions on K&N air filters and the claims of increased power and gas mileage? Thanks
  • Just sold my wife's 1998 mustang. I put a K&N air filter on it at the first oil change. It had 450,000 miles with no engine issues. Can say it improved the performance but it bib not heart. Also have one on both my current drives.
  • If you maintain you engine like a race car mechanic does... their great... other wise I'd go with the Manuf's recommendation...
  • I've got a K&N on both my 2002 diesel and my 2005 6 cylinder. The 02 has 237,000 miles on it and the 05 has 256,000. Never had any problems. I clean the filters about every 6 months. It sure beats buying new air filters every 6 months. The K&N's have more than paid for themselves.
  • I've learned from reading the forum, the K&N is considered to be a poor choice because of the dirt it allows into the engine.
  • yes had one put on my 2001 born free ,three k later had the rv in the ford shop the oil on the k@n clogged up my mass air flo sensor , threw it away .
  • some years ago a test was done on various filters compared to factory filter for a LLY GM duramax. Results NONE of the aftermarket filters came close to the factory in the amount of dust and size of dust they filtered K& N included.

Some even had more air restriction. Most had less restricion, but, it was difference in fractions of inches/of water colum not enough to really care about, but the amount of particles that passed through was signficantly more than the factory filter.

Now, that was for one specific filter comparison. How other factory filters compare, well who knows.
