Koler Generator Problem

I am helping a friend on his Koler generator 4000 watt that came with his camper and I can get the engine to turn over and start with the switch on the panel by the engine but when I release the switch the ignition cuts out. I tried the switch on the dash and that switch does not work all the time and I tested the switch and it is fine. Also the choke is not heating up. I would appreciate any help thanks. Tim

In my experience the problem you describe is most often low voltage in the house battery that powers the generator.

You can start the generator on as little as 9 volts in the house battery, but that would mean unsafe low voltage on the output side also so the system then shuts off the generator as a safety precaution.

Measure the voltage in the house battery, I'll bet you find it's low.
  • Check the oil level, if equipped with a oil level sensor these small engines bypass the sensor while the starter is engaged, but when the key is released a low oil level or bad sensor will shutdown the engine.
