Kwikee electric step warning light.

My rig has a single step without the auto in/out function. It has a rocker switch just inside the entry door and the step will operate with the battery switch disconnected or connected. There is no auto retract mode when the engine is started like I have had before. There is simply a little red light near the steering wheel that is supposed to warn you that you have forgotten to run the step in. The thing that is bugging me is that the light is on whether the step is in or out. It's on anytime the ignition switch is on. I crawled under the step and looked all around for some sort of limit switch that controls that light depending on step position but can find no such switch anywhere. I was wondering if someone has already been through this and understands how that light is supposed to be actuated? Any help or suggestions are welcome.

That (the light) is going to be a non Kwikee item- usually a magnetic reed switch with a magnet. The magnet may have fallen off, or the step is not retracting enough to close the switch.

I finally got under there again and sure enough, just like Chris said, there is a reed switch on the side of the unit. The wired part with the switch in it had fallen off in the past (silicone used for adhesive had failed) and someone just tucked the switch inside the wire loom where it wasn't visible. I had just overlooked the small actuating magnet portion which is still in place. Thanks Chris.

You are confusing the OPERATION magnet with an add on magnet that sends a signal to a dash indicator light. This type step has 2 magnets. The 2nd is NOT part of the Kwikee system and parts supplied by Kwikee. Doug
  • Well I didn't get out to the RV today. The wife drug me off to a home tour thing that burned my morning and then when I went out back to the RV, I found the rear window of my truck canopy had exploded from this nice Florida sun. Cleaning up that fiasco ruined my afternoon.

I was expecting to find some limit switch on the order that Havey showed but there was nothing there. The only two wires down there go to the motor. I thought maybe the motor is stopping when an amperage jump is detected but that in itself would not turn a light on and off up at the dash. I guess I will have to trace the wires all the way from the dash back to the step switch.

I don't know if it's do-able or not but I think I will see if the auto controller can be added to this model step. I had one before that had the magnetic switch on the door jam and screen door. I remember there was a brain-box screwed to the bottom of the step near the motor. It worked good.

I tried a magnetic switch first but it was very sensitive to the distance between the switch and the step. There was just too much side to side play in the step to make the magnetic switch useful.

Maybe a light and photocell sensor was used in your setup. If so, check for mud obscuring them.

The OEM installed Magnetic switch is usually on the linkage ARM and the wired part on the motor area. That removes any possible play for a Magnetic switch

  • Check both fuses that supply power to the step. There is a control and a motor power fuse.
