Kwikee Revolution Electric Step Motor

My steps failed in the down position on my last trip in my 2013 Itasca Sunstar 30T. I learned that this model has no clevis/cotter pin assembly to release the steps from the motor to get them up manually. Apparently you have to remove the motor. But eventually, I got them to work by tapping on the motor with a plastic head hammer. Kwikee tells me they will replace the motor under warranty only if it fails completely. My warranty expires in about 4 months.

I am trying to decide whether to run it until it fails completely or to have a mobile RV repair service go ahead & replace it now, knowing it probably won't be covered by Kwikee or my extended warranty. But I am unsure whether this first failure means there will be more sooner rather than later or whether it is just an isolated occurrence.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks,
Cass

  • The motor is not failing, it is in perfectly good condition and operates normally now as always. The step mechanism was simply binding at some point, and this happened just once over years of operation. The control module has an excess current detection feature so that if the steps are blocked, the motor will shut off. That is what happened in this case, the mechanism was binding, which caused excess current to be drawn, so the control module shut off the power to the motor.

We had our Kwikee steps stick in the retracted position during a trip, and started doing some of the troubleshooting steps from the manual. I didn't have the specialized test connectors so I took it into the shop. They simply removed the bolts holding the motor in and had the motor hanging loose. The motor turned when opening and closing the door, so something in the mechanism was jammed. They put the motor back in and no issues since. Took a total of 10 minutes. Gave it a thorough dose of KwikLube.

A bad motor WILL work when NOT connected to the mechanism. That is why you tap it with a hammer when it fails. IF the motor starts working when you hit it with a hammer, it has bad windings and will fail again. Doug
  • Unfortunately, I do not have a reliable dealer service department in my area. It is several hours drive away & ,typically, they take weeks to fix anything & rarely get it right the first time. I would rather pay a local mobile guy to do it even if I have to pay without benefit of warranty than go through the dealer service experiences I have had in the past.

If you can tap on the motor and it works, it WILL fail again. Just have the Winnebago dealer replace the motor under your warranty. That is why you have a warranty. The ESC will NOT cover your failure as long as you are under the original Factory warranty. Once you are out of the original warranty your ESC will cover it as long as the motor is a covered item. Intermittant Kwikee step motor failures are common even under warranty. What Kwikee is telling you is that if you insist on diagnosing and doing the work yourself(or use a mobile service) they will not cover it if the motor bench tests good when they get it back. Winne dealers or authorized Kwikee service centers do not have that problem. Doug

PS, I am not aware of any Kwikee step that does not have the pivot pin with the cotter key. You must have a brand new series. The Kwikee website does not show a specific breakdown for the revolution series step.

KWIKEE verified that they do not have a parts breakdown for this model step. Just a parts listing, but they did state that if you go to a Winne dealer, they will auth a new motor as long as the dealer states in the warranty claim that the problem is intermittent. They will not deal with you or a mobile service on this type issue.
