Leaking Lippert Slide pump - with pics
Since we purchased our Wildcat in 2004, we have had problems with the slide moving in and out slowly. We also found that the pump motor draws 70-90 amps! Now the pump reservoir is leaking, presumably around the connection to the pump.
Picture 1 is pump before removal.
Picture 2 is tank with hydraulic fluid and sludge.
Picture 3 is magnet with sludge.
Picture 4 is pump without tank.
I have removed the pump and have a few questions.
1) Lippert manual states Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) should be used in the pump. My pump does NOT have ATF, rather it looks and smells like hydraulic fluid. When re-installing, should I use ATF? If so, how can I bleed the fluid from the cylinder? If not, what type of hydraulic fluid?
2) What caused it to leak? O-ring is clean and soft. No damage. The rubber o-ring and matching plastic housing looks like a poor design. It will probably always leak but what can I do to prevent future leaks? Should I clean it up and re-assemble?
3) Lots of "gunk" in the tank. There is a magnet and it was covered with a bunch of metallic "sludge". This was also present in the bottom of the tank. Where did it come from? Is this why the pump draws so many amps? Should I disassemble the pump and see if there is any damage?
4) Why is this unit mounted on it's side???? It seems like the most logical mounting direction would be with the tank facing DOWN. Fluid would not leak from the area between the tank and pump if it were facing down. Of course if mounted facing down, the fill cap would need to be at the other end of the tank.
5) Is there an electric motor available to move the slide in and out? How difficult would it be to do a retrofit?
