As a follow-up to my last post, I wanted to let anyone that is interested know that I believe I have found the solution to the problem noted in the original post. This solution may work for a similar arrangements but is intended for Lippert Hydraulic slide systems that utilized the Haldex pumps with the cylindrical reservoirs that hold the ATF. These tanks use a #348 (ID: 4 3/8" CS: 3/16") O-Ring that is Buna-n (Nitrile) which is petroleum resistent.
I recently purchased 4 (the minimum that I could order) #348 Nitrile Quad Rings (sometimes called X-Rings) and used one to replace my original O-Ring. The fit is tight and appears to be holding well. These rings have twice the sealing surface of a standard O-Ring. I believe what is happening is that grit gets into the tank and works itself under the ring and then it starts leaking. With the Quad Ring, one seal should keep the grit out while the other seals so I believe it will hold up for good while.
This solution also eliminates the need for RTV or Permatex as has been suggested in other posts. I think it is important to be able to remove and clean the tank, if needed, without have to deal with other sealers.
I plan to keep an extra Quad Ring but would be happy to sell the other two if anyone has trouble finding these things. Just send me a private message if you are interested.
